This week Laura Draper and Rachel Lau, senior immigration caseworkers and trainee solicitors at Wilsons, gave a presentation at the open day advice session for refugees organised as part of Refugee Week by Queen Mary College, University of London. The event was attended by a range of people including representatives from local refugee communities as well as several refugees the majority of whom were from Syria. Laura and Rachel had the task of explaining the asylum process in the UK and answering individual questions after the presentation. Other speakers were from the Queen Mary legal advice clinic, Rights in Exile, the Bar Pro Bono Unit and the barrister Kathryn Cronin. Laura and Rachel said after the event that “it is clear there is a high demand for immigration advice and a real difficulty in finding organisations to assist, particularly in cases no longer in scope for legal aid”.
Our immigration department continues to represent asylum seekers and assist refugees whenever we can and we were pleased to support this initiative of Queen Mary College.
